James Guay

James Guay is one of our wonderful fifth grade teachers at Twin Peaks Classical Academy. His knowledge and skills provide an excellent experience for his students, and his dedication to Twin Peaks make him an integral member of the elementary team. Let's get to know him better:

When did you know you wanted to be an educator?

I've always been an educator, just not in the public school setting. I spent 20 years educating adults and geriatrics about health and wellness, but eventually I realized I wanted to work with younger people where I felt I could be a stimulus for greater long-term change. Plus, I love the energy of children.

Steve Spohr was hands down my favorite teacher. He was my high school music teacher, and I played guitar in jazz band, and since we needed low brass in our orchestra, not only did he teach me to play the tuba, but he encouraged me to try out for the all-state orchestra. I made the cut, and it was an inspiring experience to play with that group of students. He always pushed me beyond my comfort level, and he was a great saxophone player!

I strongly believe that many schools misuse and overuse technology in the classroom, especially at the elementary level. It does a major disservice to our children who need to be exposed to classic literature and read and write about a rich content in the arts and sciences like we teach at Twin Peaks through core knowledge.

What else would you like us to know about YOU?

I love to read, explore new places, and spend time outdoors, and I am grateful for the Twin Peaks community of teachers, administrators, students, and parents. This is a special place.
