Is it possible for students to have organic, informal—and yet rigorous—discussions about their readings in history and literature? Is it possible for a 6th grader to share ideas that are welcomed by 11th graders? Is it possible for a question to unite the readings of literature and history, 6th grade through 12th grade?
Yes!—Yes it is.
The tradition for 6th grade through 12th grade at the end of each semester is to have a combined history and literature final. All students receive the same prompt, yet they make their argument primarily out of the readings from their respective classes. In preparation for the final, they meet in the commons to have a guided discussion surrounding the prompt.
This semester’s prompt focuses on questions surrounding monsters. If you have a secondary student—or if you know one—start a conversation with them asking one of these questions!! What makes a monster? At what point does a person become a monster? Does this happen suddenly or gradually? Does suppression of humanity spawn monstrosity? How do we fight monsters (even the ones inside)? Is it necessary for humanity to create monsters? What role does fear play in the creation of a monster?
The young and the old can discuss monsters, and monsters have been part of the human story for thousands of years. We are excited to see the direction students take their thinking!
National Honor Society meets to discuss upcoming projects for the remainder of the school year. NHS is one of the many clubs that secondary students have the opportunity to participate in.
